Let’s Start a Riot (a Riot)

I want to take this moment to discuss the music played at the hockey games. When I heard the title song (“Riot” by Three Days Grace) earlier this season, I thought how ironic it was that a song like that would be playing at UMass. Afterall, the lyrics are “let’s start a riot”

So that got me thinking, can we, as a group of bloggers, fans, and students, list every song that is played during our beloved hockey games?

I’ll start by posting my favorite: “No Limit” by 2Unlimited (the song for the first puck drop of every period)

So please feel free to post your favorite songs and comment on what songs you like and dislike in the comments section and maybe as a blog, we can come up with an ultimate UMass hockey mix.

In other hockey east news, Maine swept UNH, which puts us in 4th place, but a mere 2 points out from second place. We also have two games against Maine (tied for second) at the end of the season and one game against BC (also tied for second) too. What does this mean? Those three games are going to help decide the top 4 spots of Hockey East.

Northeastern is coming up this weekend for White Bright Out Night (rumor has it that the term “whiteout” is trademarked). I will also be going to the game at Northeastern, so to any fans considering the journey, they usually put visiting fans in section 23, and I might request it since it ended up being primarily UMass last game.

And finally, the pot-o-beans is tonight. I was looking forward to watching NEU play Harvard, but apparently NESN doesn’t think the game is going to be big enough to broadcast. So I will wait for the 8:00 BU BC matchup. I am thinking that a BU victory would help UMass more since BC is doing better in the Pairwise, and a BC loss might move UMass up. So GO BU? (can they both lose? is that possible?) or at least BU should try to take out Muse and every other BC player so we can have an easier time when we venture out of the quiet comfort of the Mullins and move to the Conte Forum where the Superfrauds will outnumber us. Ugh.

But we will revamp the BC hate later. Right now lets climb the NEU goalie Mountain (who was playing during the first 4-1 victory at Matthews earlier this season) and start the Northeastern (girls are husky) hate.

Go UMass!

~Ben

Post edited. There are levels we’re not going sink to here at Fight Mass, and gay-bashing is one of those.

    Anyway, getting back on topic…

Van Halen’s “Right Now” is the theme song for the pre-game videos for both basketball and hockey; I think it originated with the 100 Years of UMass Basketball thing last year and they just kinda rolled with it.

Darude’s “Sandstorm” is the song that gets played for starting lineups for hoops (obviously); the song for hockey is Tomoyasu Hotei’s “Battle Without Honor or Humanity,” better known as the theme from Kill Bill.

Obviously “rock and roll pt 2″ by that loveable child molestor Gary Glitter

However in general the music played at the Bill is terrible pop bullshit. It never switches up and is generally lazy. Listen, if we don’t have a band we might as well get a good music person who will mix in some different stuff every game. Shit, I would do it for free

@blindspots88 The song in question is The Blood of Cu Chulainn by Mychael & Jeff Danna. The reason that they use that song is becasue the Chuck-A-Puck is sponsored by The Harp, which is an Irish pub.

The song was made famous in the movie The Boondock Saints as the opening credit music.

Still, worst music ever for a suposedly exciting event. Play dropkicks or flogging Molly, cutting song makes me sleepy and doesn’t fit the event at all

(wordpress app now let’s you comment on phone, this is win)

Yeah, frankly I’d rather hear “Shipping Up to Boston” again. It just seems so out of place.

Other mainstays are obviously “YMCA” by the Village People and “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond. The OMG BIG POP SONG OF THE MOMENT always gets played too; currently it’s a three-way tie between Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind,” Ke$ha’s “TiK ToK” and Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the USA.” Which are fun, I guess.

I could do without the “Cha Cha Slide” every game though. It’s the estranged, retarded brother of “Cotton Eye Joe” and “Macarena,” and the uncle of “Crank That Soulja Boy.”

Oh yeah, and let’s not forget “Hit the Road Jack” by the immortal Ray Charles, which SHOULD be the only penalty song. NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” sounds like something Tsongas would do. I also think they need to bring back Billy Joel’s “Innocent Man” for UMass penalties.

I could do without empire state of mind. song sucks as does new york

it’s catchy as fuck, but yeah. i think part of it has to do with how proud umass it of itself for getting jay-z to play here last semester. i think the collegian’s STILL chirping about it when they’re not devoting two whole pages to the latest larry the cable guy release (i’m not joking)

I get really annoyed when they play Shippin up to Boston… Ok, I get it, we are Massachusetts and we love DKM, but seriously. We are NOT Boston. If you ever go to BC or BU they like live by that song. So WHY do we insist on playing it: A. every game, and B. whenever they play at the Bill.

I really like The Funeral by Plasmic Honey. That song always pumps me up.

As for the Irish music, I never really notice it. They used to play Ready Steady Go by P. Oakenfold (sp) that song was pretty fast and loud.

I kinda see your point, but being THE University of Massachusetts, I feel we can lay claim to all parts of this fine state, Boston included.

However, I think it would be cool to integrate some UMass bred bands into the mix. Dinosaur Jr of Pixies anyone?

I have been trying to get them to play U-Mass by the Pixies for a long time. But they wont, because its vulgar.
Ok so they might say some pretty vulgar things a few times but you can hardly tell what it is unless you know what they are saying. And hell they only really need to play he 35 second portion where they say, “Its Educational, University of Massachusetts”

Oh well… what can we do, Party in the USA just gets everyone jumpin around like instantly.

      • February 10, 2010 at 6:26 pm

Yeah, not to mention it would be mind-numbingly easy to edit out the couple of naughty lines. It absolutely blows my mind that UMass doesn’t embrace that song, or the Pixies in general, being one of our most well-known products.

    Livin’ on a Prayer–Bon Jovi

“She says: We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got
‘Cause it doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not.
We’ve got each other and that’s a lot for love -
    We’ll give it a shot.

We’re half way there – Livin’ on a prayer

Take my hand and we’ll make it
    I swear – livin’ on a prayer.”
